Hello! I’m Bernadette Brown, Licensed Massage Therapist, and owner of Targeted Therapeutic Massage. I’ve been a massage therapist since 2010, but helping others has always been my passion. I became a registered nurse in 2005. I moved around the different areas of nursing for a while and eventually settled in home care for over a decade. I eventually became a supervisor, and mostly worked from behind a desk for 8-10 hours a day. While at first this was great, since I had come a long way from walking up and down the long hospital hallways for 12 hours a day, somehow my body still felt the same. Even though most of my time was spent behind a computer and on the phone, at the end of the day I still felt beat up and exhausted like I’d been doing manual labor. I found myself in the very place I went to school to learn to help people deal with. It was very insidious.
After remembering why I chose massage, I decided to redirect my focus to massage, and help people in a different way. I worked at a franchise for a while, and while it was gratifying, I didn’t have much freedom. I wanted to be able to give myself my way, in an environment of my own making, and in ways that I could best utilize my skills. So, Targeted Therapeutic Massage was born! I still love nursing, and will always be a nurse at heart. I’m just not practicing full time at the moment. Massage is currently my full time passion. I truly believe that by helping others we help ourselves. But, I also even more strongly believe that we have to first care for, and help ourselves to fully do that.
You will reap the benefits of massage if it becomes a regular part of your life. My goal is for us to work together to take better care of your health, long-term.
Communication is key. I need to know what you're feeling, experiencing and what you're looking to gain in order to best help you. In turn, I will explain the treatment and what you can expect to gain from it.
Massage is a tool to help heal. Whether it's stress, illness or simply to pamper yourself, the benefits of massage can be life changing. I would be honored to take that journey with you.
Many people don’t know that not all massage is the same. There are different types, used for different purposes. Here are some common ones along with a brief, general description.
Swedish Massage or “Relaxation Massage“
A relaxation massage is meant to do just that – relax you. Most often the type you might get in a spa setting. It uses light, gentle strokes meant to be relaxing and calming. It is the most gentle type of massage. Since lighter pressure is used, it works with the more superficial layers and tissues closest to the skin. This type is often used to treat symptoms of anxiety, stress, tension, and to increase circulation.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. It targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body's surface.
Therapeutic Massage
Most therapeutic massages are performed in a clinical setting rather than at a spa, unlike relaxation massage. The goal of a therapeutic massage is to treat a health issue, relieve pain, and increase circulation, rather than simply helping you to relax. The pressure will generally be more intense than a relaxation massage. Therapists mobilize your soft tissue (muscles, tendons, fascia, etc) with an aim to restore normal functional use. Often a combination of techniques and pressures will be used. While relaxation and stress relief are not the main goal of therapeutic massage, it is usually a welcome result of relieving the pain, tension, and improving the circulation throughout the body.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is a more focused deep tissue massage and may focus on a certain area of the body. It is designed to help athletes before, during and after training. It is useful for anyone who exercises to increase flexibility, prevent injuries and help with healing after a sports injury. Sports massage is specifically tailored to different sports and sporting injuries. It is not a relaxing form of massage and can often be quite strenuous. It works by stretching tight muscles, stimulating inactive muscles and improving the condition of the soft tissue. The aim of sports massage is to reduce the stress and tension that can build up in the soft tissues of the body during exercise.
Trigger Point Massage
Trigger points are very tight, sore, painful spots—also called knots—found in muscles. These knots are hypersensitive and when pressure is applied, it produces pain in a different part of your body. A trigger point massage helps work out those knots and reduces the pain associated with them. Typically, massage therapists use a type of compression—sometimes referred to as digital pressure—to help relieve trigger points. The technique uses a combination of strong, gentle, and deep pressure for a period of typically 30-60 seconds. You might feel some discomfort when your trigger points are touched initially, but this is soon replaced by relief as the knot is loosened.
Thai Massage
Thai Bodywork is the traditional massage method of Thailand and has been known by many English names such as Thai massage, Thai yoga massage, Thai Traditional, assisted yoga, and has even been regularly referred to as “the lazy man’s yoga”, however it might be more accurate to suggest it like “having yoga done TO YOU”, where the practice tends to be a reeducation or reintroduction to a person with their own body. The therapist uses passive leaning weight to apply compressions along the body in a rhythmic rocking pattern. Often tractions, stretches, and joint mobilizations are interspersed throughout the sessions. During the session both the giver and receiver remain comfortably clothed. This type is used to improve flexibility and range of motion, improve body alignment and posture, relieve muscle tension, increase circulation, stimulate internal organs, encourage body awareness, and promote relaxation.
Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. When Performed by a licensed massage therapist, massage therapy involves using different pressures, movements and techniques to manipulate muscles and other soft tissues in the body. With a goal of slowing down your nervous system, massage therapy can be used to release stress and tension, provide relief from symptoms, heal injuries and support wellness. It's generally considered part of integrative medicine. A common misconception about massage is that it's only part of a spa day and intended for pampering yourself. While this may be true for some people, it is most frequently a tool for stress reduction and pain relief.
